Significant Internet Disruption Affects Dozens Online Platforms and Apps

An extensive online disruption has disrupted dozens websites and apps worldwide, and users reporting troubles accessing the internet after problems at the web hosting platform.

The disrupted services comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-managed platforms like its main retail site and the Ring home security firm.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was affected along with its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were also reports of problems using the the tax authority site on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring customers took to networks to report their security devices were failing.

Just within Britain, reports of issues on particular applications reached the thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the outage started in the Atlantic coast of the America at Amazon Web Services, a unit that offers essential online backbone for numerous businesses, who lease capacity on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest cloud computing service.

Shortly after late night (PDT) in the United States (8am BST), the company announced “elevated error rates and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the east coast of the US. The ripple effect seemed to hit apps around the world, with the outage tracking website showing issues with the same sites in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on internet outages, also reported a surge in problems on the start of the week, and numerous instances situated in the Virginia area, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the problems started.
